The Umbrella Academy has always marched to the beat of its own drum – and the scrappy Netflix superhero series is all the better for it. Despite its frequently apocalyptic stakes, the show is a uniquely joyous affair prone to outbursts of song and dance; the series premiere memorably found the estranged, extraordinary Hargreeves siblings united in grooving to Tiffany’s 1987 cover of “I Think We’re Alone Now.

All 10 episodes of Batman: Caped Crusader Season 1 will stream on Prime Video beginning Thursday, August 1. The first name on the screen says it all. Before the marquee talents who led the headlines about Batman: Caped Crusader’s development and eventual migration to Prime Video, before the title Batman: Caped Crusader, even, there it is in elegant, elongated Art Deco lettering: Bruce Timm. Not that you’d need his executive producer credit to know it: The lush orchestral score, retro-cool designs, and shadowy urban environments all point to Timm, one of the chief architects of 1992’s Batman: The Animated Series (and the celebrated roster of DC cartoons that followed in its wake), revisiting his greatest televised triumph.

This review contains full spoilers for House of the Dragon Season 2. Sometimes in the UK they say that a person is “all mouth and no trousers”: They promise a lot but never deliver. Season 2 of HBO’s House of the Dragon is often all-mouth-and-no-trousers TV. Sure, there’s a really accomplished cast, wearing costumes clearly crafted by experts and standing in gloriously realised environments. But they’re just going around in circles, week after week.

Dear sweet baby Dracarys, they’ve done it again. Another episode of House of the Dragon has laboured to move pieces into place and establish character dynamics and deliver some beautifully written dialogue and failed utterly to deliver the hoped-for action alongside it. In terms of story and drama, this eighth episode was a triumph – or would have been had it arrived two or three episodes ago. But for a season finale to be all cliffhanger and no spectacle is close to unforgivable.

The early 2010s were an incredible time to be a fan of indie games, with classics like Limbo, Bastion, and Super Meat Boy paving the way for others to follow. One of my favorites from that period was the original Volgarr the Viking – it’s a 2D platformer that looks and plays like a 16-bit Sega Genesis game, but one informed by the ways in which the genre had evolved since the 90s.

Rhaenyra’s fortunes take an upward turn as we approach the season finale – but is she storing up trouble for the future? It may share a theme song with Game of Thrones, but House of the Dragon is its own big, scaly beast. As it did in season 1, it has once again resisted its parent show’s tendency to put the big action finale in the penultimate episode. At least, we hope there’s more to come after this week.

All 12 episodes of Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles premiere on Paramount+ on August 9, 2024. It had to be really stressful to follow up on 2023’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. The animation, action, story, and comedy of the heroes in a half shell’s reintroduction to moviegoers are all spectacular; Mutant Mayhem is also one of the only TMNT adaptations to date that makes the Turtles feel like actual teenagers.

It’s kind of an odd shift for a sequel to go from an outer space setting to a nautical one, but SteamWorld games have never shied away from being kind of odd. In fact, it’s their whole thing. There are direct connections between the silly swashbuckling story of SteamWorld Heist 2 and the original from 2015, but those take a while to show up – instead, much of Heist 2 feels completely separate as it gives you control of a submarine and a crew full of goofy robots in a colorfully cartoony ocean.
